What is in a door job

Front doors take the worst of the Florida sun and show it first. Garage doors take up more of the front elevation than anything else and get ignored. Both are handled here.

  • Front door refinishing, staining, and repainting
  • Garage door repainting, single and double
  • Sidelights, transoms, and surrounding trim
  • Mahogany and hardwood door restoration
  • Marine-grade UV clear coats for sun-exposed doors
  • Hardware removed, protected, and reinstalled

Ideal for: Front entries, garage doors, double doors, historic and hardwood doors

Two doors, two different jobs

They sit on the same elevation and they fail for different reasons. Most houses need both done, and doing one without the other is what makes the mismatch obvious.

What we do

Painted, or stripped back and restained with a marine-grade clear coat.

  • Single, double, and arched entry doors
  • Mahogany and hardwood restoration, stripped to bare wood
  • Sidelights, transoms, and the surrounding casing
  • Decorative glass and ironwork masked by hand
  • Marine-grade UV clear coat rated for direct sun
  • Hardware removed, bagged, and reinstalled

Why it fails

A south or west-facing door takes hours of direct sun a day with no shade and no airflow behind it. The clear coat breaks down first, then the wood greys and the grain opens.

What a few Florida summers do

Nothing structural changed here. The door is the same door. What came off was the failed clear coat, and what went back on is rated for the sun that took the first one.

Doors we have brought back

Stripping a door back to bare wood

A garage door masked to the brick, sprayed in passes, and left to flash off between coats. Sun does this to a south-facing door in a few Florida summers, and this is how it comes back.

  1. 01Masked to the brick first, because overspray on stone is a second job.
  2. 02Sprayed in passes rather than rolled, so the panels come back flat.
  3. 03Left to flash off between coats, which is most of the day on site.

“Ancient Modern just repainted our front doors. Florian was very professional and gave us an informed quote. They carefully covered all areas and were very respectful of our space. Job was completed in two days and was perfect. We will definitely use their services again.”

Send a photo of the front of the house.

We can usually tell from a photo whether the door needs a repaint or a full strip, and whether the garage door should be done at the same time.

  1. One photo from the streetFar enough back that the entry and the garage doors are both in it.
  2. One close on the door itselfClose enough to see whether the clear coat has crazed or the grain has opened.
  3. We tell you strip or repaintAnd whether doing the garage door at the same time is worth it. Usually it is, because the crew is already there.

South and west-facing doors are the ones worth sending first; they go before the others.
